Men’s single breasted jackets featured gingham or houndstooth print with two buttons. The look was completed with a bow tie. Men donned slacks and sport coats with belts. Shirts had deep, pointed collars and V necks. Slacks typically flared out or belled out widely in more extreme styles. Patterned tank tops and tight knit turtlenecks were also worn. Men’s shoes came in a variety of hues, including white. They would have a small 1/2 inch to 1 inch heel or platform. At the height of their popularity in the late 1970s, platform heels reached 4 inches tall.

The women’s liberation movement during the 1970s led to a bit of gender bending on both sides of fashion. While women wore men’s hats, baggy slacks and ties, men wore snug fitting knits and pastel and jewel tones traditionally worn by women. While women wore jackets that were bulkier and masculine than in past eras, men’s jackets were very similar, and a bit tailored around the waist. Men also wore rich and bold global inspired patterns, which reflected the decade’s preoccupation with travel to exotic locations.
