EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) With just three days left in 2010 hundreds of West Michigan residents are preparing to ring in the new year helping children fighting a deadly disease.

Organizers say between 800 to 1,000 people will take to Reeds Lake on New Year’s Eve to participate in the 27th Annual Wolverine Resolution Run. program coordinator. "We help meet families’ needs and reduce the stress they experience so that they can focus on the number one priority of caring for their child."

The race actually started nearly three decades ago as a whim, says organizer Joe Obrien.

"A bunch of people wanted to get together on New Year’s Day and run. The first year we did it it was more of a fun run. The next year it was more of a formal event and the popularity of it just took off," he said.

Over the years the race has increased in popularity and grown into something very important for many people. The 4 mile walk/run is popular with runners and race enthusiasts but also for people who want to support a good cause.

"Both. and we get a ton of people who just want to start the new year right. We have people running in costumes. We have people running with champagne glasses and hats and Father Time and Baby New Year come out every year so it is just a big fun event," said Obrien. "Right after Christmas the spike in our registration goes up tremendously. About 15 years ago Wolverine came on board and helped boost our numbers."

"One of the great things about this race is it is a great partnership. You are starting off the year right by doing something healthy for yourself but you are also helping children who are struggling with illnesses throughout the year and what a great combination, to do something for yourself as well as someone else," said Thompson. "Some of these funds may be used to provide meal passes for families who have been at the hospital for a long time. It can get quite pricey to eat there. with their entry fee, which Wolverine will then match dollar for dollar. will be entered into the Charity Challenge drawing; the grand prize winner will receive an airline ticket to anywhere in the continental United States.
