Sternberg: Believe me, I know about conference realignment because my current university, Oklahoma State, is in a conference The Big 12 where realignment lately has taken an almost crazy turn. I think it is important to take into account many different viewpoints, but my own, coming in, is that Wyoming should stay in Division I. It is the division in which there is the most opportunity for teams to compete at the highest level and in which there is the most opportunity for student athletes to develop. I very much hope that the Mountain West stays intact. I am among those who have been very disappointed in the realignment of the Big 12, because I think that money played too much of a role. Let’s place the primary focus on athletic competition and leadership development, not TV contracts and the like. Those things can matter but always should be subordinate to the reasons we have athletics in the first place.

Sternberg: I expect them to do their best, and they should have the same expectation for me that I do my best. That’s what a good university is about. I want to see athletics fully integrated with the mission of the university to serve the state of Wyoming and to make our nation the very best it can be. If athletics is developing the leaders who will bring our state and nation to greatness, it is doing its job. I want winning teams, but most importantly, teams that act in ways that give us great pride and bring credit to what soon will be the No. 1 land grant university in the United States.
