IN the 1950s free beach concerts were not designed for thousands of school leavers eager to party at Surfers Paradise.

Huge crowds used to pack Greenmount Beach to enjoy live music and dancing staged by entertainment identities Claude and Beryl Carnell.

The idea came about in 1956 when the legendary Jack Evans convinced Claude, who had been running the Currumbin Playroom, to branch out into beach entertainment and tender for the rights to run Greenmount Kiosk.

He did that, with girlfriend Beryl and his financial backer Vince Pidcock, a chemist.

The beach events became big business and the couple held the Greenmount Beach Kiosk lease for 16 years.

They kept bringing in improvements, including the construction of a giant stage and canopy to protect partygoers from storms that would lash Greenmount Beach on hot summer afternoons.

Some of the country top acts turned up to give the free concerts and entertainers such as Johnny O Normie Rowe, Tony Worsley, Danny Shaw and Little Pattie took to the stage.
