RICHMOND, Va. The University of Maine women’s basketball team (1 12) dropped a 82 47 decision at Virginia Commonwealth (7 7) on New Year’s Day.

The Rams had five scorers in double figures, led by Robyn Parks’ double double of 24 points and 11 rebounds on 10 for 16 shooting. The Rams swiped 21 steals from Maine as the Black Bears shot 29.5% from the field while VCU went 34 for 73 (46.6%).

An early 11 2 VCU run, capped by a bucket from Janniina Koivunen, gave the Rams an early 15 8 lead before Anderson put an end to the run with one of her two first half three pointers.

The Rams extended their lead to double digits at 24 14 until Walczak squared up and knocked down a jumper from the left elbow to once again cut the VCU lead to single figures.

After the make, the Rams responded with a 5 0 run to take their largest lead of the half at 29 16 with just under five minutes remaining.

The Black Bears answered the run with back to back three pointers to once again lower the lead to single digits. Anderson started the Black Bear run with a three from the top of the key. Maine battled on the defensive side of the ball and regained possession before Liz Wood (Catlett, Va.) stuck a three from the left corner to bring Maine back within seven, 31 24.

The Rams ended the half on a 4 0 run to take a 35 24 lead into the break.

Walczak paced the first half Maine attack with nine points on 4 for 7 shooting while also pulling down five rebounds. Anderson chipped in six points with a pair of three point shots. VCU swiped 13 steals in the opening half and shot 45.7% from the field en route to its 11 point halftime lead.

The Rams answered with a 20 2 run over the next 5:43, building its lead to 57 31, after hitting four three pointers during the span of the streak.

Maine kept charging as Lauren Bodine (Louisville, Ky.) knocked down a pair of shots from behind the arc. However, the Rams responded with an 8 0 run over the next 2:10, taking their lead to 70 39 with seven minutes to play in regulation.
