Graves had a daughter named Ginny, and in the early 1950s gave her newest dolls Ginny’s name. Shortly thereafter, she changed the name of the line of dolls from Vogue to Ginny. During the 1950s, the dolls featured innovations like eyes that opened and shut, with painted eyelashes. The dolls were made of plastic and featured Graves’ detailed clothing and accessories. By 1953, the Vogue Doll Company, as it was known, grossed $2 million in a single year and the Ginny line was popular across the country.
For decades the Ginny doll had the same look. But under Lesney, that look changed. Fashion dolls were in, and Ginny changed with the times. Lesney made the doll thinner and dressed Ginny up in designer jeans and other modern accessories. As collectors consider clothing to be the hallmark of the Ginny line, to them the Lesney attire was inferior to Graves’ creations. Lesney sold the Ginny line to Meritus in 1984, which reinstated Ginny’s old look. Meritus in turn sold the line to R. Dakin and Company two years later.
