While ballet has its roots in the 17th century, the idea of balancing oneself on the tips of the toes was not incorporated into the dance until the 18th century. In 1795, choreographer Charles Didelot invented a "flying machine" which allowed ballerinas to balance on their toes before being lifted off the ground. From that time forward, choreographers sought new ways to add pointe work to their ballets.
Dancers Maria Taglioni and Pierina Legnani are said to be the first to dance balanced on the tips of the toes but the pointe shoe as we know it today did not make its first appearance until the 20th century. Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova is accredited with their invention when she would add stiff leather soles and a flattened toe to her dancing shoes. That general construction is what ballerinas wear in the 21st century.
There are also, a drawstring (as in ballet slippers), ribbons, and elastics (both ribbons an elastics to be sewen on by the dancer) to hold the shoe in place.
