The Wild have been planning for months to take a run at Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, and after the first day of free agency, they haven landed either one. It still entirely possible they won get either of them. But it clear at this point they got the attention of both players.

A person with knowledge of the situation said on Sunday night that the Wild are among the final three teams that both Parise and Suter are considering. Both players are expected to make decisions on Monday, and if the Wild get Parise, their chances of getting Suter would seem to be substantially better.

The Wild could end up paying each one more than $100 million, dishing out eight figure signing bonuses for each, but they might also be one of the only teams in the mix that both players are considering. Both Parise and Suter are Midwestern kids who played against each other in the WCHA (Parise played in the Xcel Energy Center in two Final Fives). They used to share an agent (Neil Sheehy) and won silver together in the 2010 Winter Olympics. If they want to play together, the Wild might hold the key.

As it is, it got to register as a bit of a surprise that they put themselves this far in the mix. They missed out on defensemen Jason Garrison and Bryan Alen today, losing two possible backup plans for Suter. And Kings forward Dustin Penner re signed with the team, meaning they lost another option if Parise goes elsewhere. Matt Carle is still on the market, but he probably sign after Suter does. At this point, it seems like the Wild are all in on both players; we knew they would be, but not necessarily at the expense of their backup plans. They played a bold strategy, and they might be a day away from it working.

There was a report this afternoon that Suter was close to choosing Detroit, and if the two players end up going to separate teams, conventional wisdom has Suter joining the Red Wings with Parise possibly heading to Pittsburgh. But the Wild have targeted these two players together, and it might be together that they end up winning them.

The whole thing feels a bit like Saturday night at a major championship: the Wild are a long way from winning anything, and it could all come apart on them tomorrow, but they go to bed with the excitement of knowing they put themselves in position.
