I haven’t had this problem with my 2 YO yet but my 4 YO gets terrible foot cramps that started while he was 2. My DH remembers getting the same thing very young from growing. I started giving a daily fruitie vitamin and 1/2 a banana and that seems to really have cut down on the amount he complains. He would only complain at night. Often waking 2 3 times a week. I also have a heating pad set up in his room that he can put on his feet at night. I just started that with him since he is 4 and can get it set up by himself. I was having to go up to him a lot at night for foot cramps. The doctor is the one that suggested the vitamin at his 4 YO check up and it seems to be helping too. My 2 YO of course had to start taking one too since her big brother got a fruitie every morning! 🙂

My son had the same problem so I took him to a local Podiatrist. Essentially, what is happening is because he has no arch in his foot (literally) it is causing him to try to compensate and he turns his feet inward when walking and because he does this it causes him to have shin splints and it is growing uncomfortable for him to wear shoes.

The solution is customized shoe inserts ($60) that he has to wear everyday, in all his shoes for all ocassions and activities (running, walking, etc.). My son, even at 4, was relieved to have an answer. I also got a prescription for a foot cream called Volataren (sp?) which I rub on his feet twice a day as I am stretching his foot and ankle. While I am sad that he will always have to have some sort of insert long term, I am comforted in the fact that I had a diagnosis other than "Growing Pains".
