For disc brakes, remove the caliper by turning the rear mount bolts counterclockwise and sliding the assembly from the rotor. Inspect the pads before removing them from the caliper pistons. Inspect the rotor. Pitting, gashes, glazing and excessive wear all can be signs of an unmaintained braking system. Pull the rotor from the hub and resurface or replace it. Some units will have internal parking brake shoes; check and replace these if required. Replace the pads on the caliper pistons, then slide it back over the rotor. Lock the rear mount bolts down clockwise.

For drum brakes, pull the drum off of the brake assembly and inspect the shoes and interior surface of the drum itself. They should not be scored or show signs of glazing. Some dust or silt is normal. Remove the shoes by levering off the long springs with a screwdriver, then turning the primary spring bolt counterclockwise. The shoes will slide out, directly away from the backing plate. Inspect the wheel cylinder for leaks. Replace the shoes with new units and slide them back into position, locking the primary spring bolt clockwise. Lever the long springs back onto the shoe hooks, check the adjustment bolt for excess play and slide the resurfaced or new drum over the brake assembly.
