A Marion Superior Court judge on Monday sentenced an Indianapolis woman to one year on home detention in a fatal hit and run case, allowing her to avoid time in prison.

Natisha M. Miller, 26, expects to be discharged from the Pennsylvania National Guard because of the felony conviction. She was assigned to the Defense Finance and Accounting Service center in Lawrence at the time of the February 2007 crash on German Church Road.

Her Mercury Cougar struck Charles A. Goodrich, 23, who was riding his bike home from work; he died within hours from blunt force injuries to his head, neck and torso.

"I believe in second chances in life," Goodrich’s brother, Andrew, told Judge Patricia Gifford during Monday’s sentencing hearing. "But she does not deserve one."

Miller had pleaded guilty to failure to stop after an accident resulting in death, and her agreement with prosecutors limited any prison sentence to one year. Gifford opted for home detention instead in a sentence that also included community service, probation for two years and restrictions on Miller’s driver’s license.

"I made a series of bad decisions which led me to this point," Miller told the judge. "I sincerely hope that in time, I can be forgiven for all the hurt I have caused."
