As we’ve written about before, buses and trains will be free from Saturday through Monday in Houston, in hopes of luring new riders and giving working men and women a little break for the Labor Day holiday.

Free rides can work to make people more comfortable and more willing to consider the bus or train. With three new rail lines set to open soon and a rethinking of how Metro operates under way, now is the time, officials say, to reach out to Houston people pondering a switch to transit.

The Katy Corridor park and ride buses are nearly always close to capacity during early morning hours going into downtown and late afternoon/evening hours leaving downtown. When buses are near capacity like that, people use alternate methods of travel. So, adding more buses during that time should increase passengers overall. Also, the two earliest morning Kingsland buses stop at Addicks to pick up more passengers. More people at Kingsland park and ride would take the bus at this earliest time period if the bus didn stop at Addicks.

Actually, the only way to REALLY get people using mass transportation (as Northeasterners all it), is to simply stop expanding freeways. That been the approach in California for the past 20 years (except for the addition of some carpool lanes). Eventually the freeways get slow enough and transportation becomes viable.

Sort of that, people will keep driving, as it is MUCH MORE practical than getting to a bus stop, waiting for a bus, transferring between buses, then walking to your job. Not even close, even if traffic is moving at 20 MPH.
