Yeah, I think I getcha. By not putting the loop in the very center of the crossed laces, you not crushing it as much. Instead you strike a compromise where it in a little safer spot, but the right foot tongue can still move left but not right, and vise versa. Seems reasonable.

I have a pair of Adidas Busenitz Sambas with the long tongue and I had this problem every time I wear them. Something I found that helps, if you don mind compromising the of the laces, is to skip the grommet or lace loop that is at the level of the loop on the tongue of the shoe, and lace from one lower to one higher. This provides some lateral stabilization for the tongue, and it doesn go to the side if you lace them up tighter. Hope this works for you, cheers.
edit: Picture of my SambasI disagree, if you have high arches, the tongue will slip to the outside, forcing your tendon that runs to the big toe against the laces. This causes a painful cramp especially when playing soccer or running. The only cure is to lace straight across the shoe (not sure what is called) rather than the standard angle and thread it through the hole in the tongue and constantly realign the tongue to the center (or wear adidas copas with the fold down tongue).
